Laboratory

Research subjects
The research subjects of the laboratory are set functions (non-additive measures, fuzzy measures, or weighted hypergraphs), piecewise-linear functions, formal concept analysis, and information visualization.   ( Soft computing, fuzzy system, or intelligent system is not included. )
In mathematics one plus one equals nothing but two, while in actuality there are many cases where one plus one does not equal two: cooperation among people, subjective evaluation, human judgments on uncertainty, etc. The concept of set function is useful for formal description and computerization of such cases. So far there have been several applications of set functions: an evaluation analysis of printed color image (Dai Nippon Printing Co.), an evaluation system of TV programs (Hakuhodo Inc.), and an evaluation aid to cellular phone design (Mitsubishi Electric Co.). There also have been many studies on applications to uncertainty management in databases and expert systems.
